TULSAN OF THE YEAR
Gerry
Clancy
The face of health care for thousands in Tulsa is
ugly: Too many people have no family doctor, are
without medical insurance and cannot even afford
care when critically ill.
The situation is manifested in a shocking
statistic: Residents living in north Tulsa, on
average, live 14 years less than those residing in
south Tulsa.
Fortunately, these cruel realities are changing,
thanks to one man’s new and innovative ideas to
use academic medicine to improve the health of
both individuals and communities.
His name is Dr. Gerard Clancy. He is dually
president of the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa
and dean of the OU College of Medicine, Tulsa,
now the School of Community Medicine, the
nation’s first so-named program.
For Clancy’s creative thinking and visionary
leadership to initiate positive change in the
accessibility of health care for the underserved, he
is TulsaPeople’s 2009 Tulsan of the Year.
